  Geoffrey V "Plantagenent" Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy was born on 24 November 1113 in Anjou, France.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Fulk V "le Jeune" King of Jerusalem, Count of Anjou and Ermenbourg of Maine.1,2,3,4,5 Geoffrey "le Bel, meaning "the Handsome" was the first to use the Plantagenet name. One story relates that his father, Fulk the Younger atoned for some evil deed by being scourged with broom twigs or planta genista before the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Another story relates that Geoffrey wore a sprig of broom or planta genista in his hat. Regardless, it is generally agreed upon that the family name of "Plantagenet" has its origins with the planta genista or broom plant.3,5 On 22 May 1127 in Le Mans, Maine, France, Geoffrey married second Matilda the Empress, daughter of Henry I "Beauclerc" King of England and Matilda of Scotland. Richardson (2004) gives their marriage date as 17 June 1128.1,7,2,3,4,5,6 After the death of Henry I in 1135, Geoffrey laid claim to Normandy through his wife Mathilda. Meanwhile, Mathilda attempted the conquest of England from her cousin King Stephen who had gained the crown. Geoffrey did not accompany her, being still engaged in the conquest of Normandy, which he completed in 1144. In 1147 he undertook a crusade with King Louis VII of France. In 1150, Geoffrey and Matilda ceded Normandy to their son Henry (later King Henry II of England), who founded the English Angevin dynasty.3 Geoffrey V "Plantagenent" Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy became Duke of Normandy in 1144.5 He died on Friday, 7 September 1151 in Château Eure-et-Loire, France, at age 37 years, 9 months and 14 days.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was buried in St. Julian's Church, Le Mans, Maine, France.3,5
