  • Notes
    • Ann Harper had been sent to the Island, having arrived in the Sydney Cove aboard Lady Juliana and in mid June 1794 was living with Jacob. On 2 September 1808 Jacob, as a second class settler, with Ann and their eight children were evacuated to VDL (Tasmania) by City of Edinburgh. Following their arrival Jacob was granted land in vicinity of Hobart at Queenborough (Sandy Bay) and Gloucester. Jacob Bellett was buried at St David’s Cemetery, Hobart, aged 47, on 2 December 1813. Ann was aged 70 when she died in 1842.

      TRIAL OF ANN HARPER

I now have the crime of Ann Harper. It appears that she herself did not steal but was a receiver of the goods and therefore just as guilty.

The incident took place in Bristol.

On the 24th September 1787 in the morning, Margaret Williams, Alice Fideo, Ann Harper and Elizabeth Seney were all on the Bristol Bridge selling grapes. Margaret Williams told the other girls she knew where she could get a silver teapot. The four girls went together into Denmark Street over the Drawbridge. They stopped at No 11 which was owned by Nancy Clutson. Margaret Williams unlatched the door and went in where she stayed for some time. When she eventually came out all four girls ran into the Medcliff Church Yard (now a Police Station, obviously not attended). Margaret then showed the other girls nine silver teaspoons, two silver tablespoons and a silver cream jug. They all agreed to go to the house of ? Norris on Redcliff Hill to sell the things. Alice Video said that Elizabeth Seney and Margaret Williams went into the house and afterwards came out and told Alice they had sold two of the spoons to Norris who had given them money for them which they had spent on victuals. Then Margaret shared out two spoons each to the girls - I suppose to Alice and Ann who had remained outside but the story r=then says that the girls gave nine teaspoons, the cream jug and the tablespoons to Elizabeth Seney’s brother to sell for them. Seney went away and they have not heard from him since.

Another informant William Humphries said on oath that after he was told the story he went to Norris’s house and found two of the teaspoons (which makes eleven teaspoons not nine as first said). Humphries was paid 20 pounds for giving that evidence.

Another informant was Mary Saunders who was a servant to Nancy Clutson, owner of the house that was robbed.

The third informant was Elizabeth Stewart who said on oath that she lived in the same street as Nancy Clutson but on the opposite side. She said she saw Margaret Williams come out of Nancy Clutson’s house and saw three other girls waiting outside as Margaret emerged the girls ran away.

The fourth informant Betty Lovell said on oath that the same teaspoons now produced were the property of Mary Saunders’ mistress. Nancy Clutson and that there was also an amount of eight shillings stolen.

Mary Saunders and Elizabeth Stewart signed by “mark”, Betty Lovell signed her own name.

Saunders, Sewart, Lovell and Humphries were paid 20 pounds for giving evidence. By whom is not stated, nor why. It seems the girls were definitely guilty. Alice Fideo was also an informer but she wasn't paid. She did go to gaol but not it seems with Margaret Williams, Ann Harper and Elizabeth Seney. This trial was only of those three. Margaret was 13, Ann 17 and Elizabeth 18.

The verdict was transportation for seven years - to Norfolk Island…
