    • K.C.B. G.C.H. Governor General of the Windward Isles

On 14 June, 1841 Clan Chief, Major-General Sir Evan John Murray-MacGregor, 2nd Baronet of Lanrick and Balquidder died while serving as the Governor of Barbados.

What a C.V. he had. Here is a glance.

He joined the British Army in 1801 and fought in the Peninsular War, and the Third Anglo-Maratha War where he was severely injured with seven dagger wounds which resulted in the loss of the use of his right arm.

He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in October 1818.

In 1822, he inherited his father’s baronetcy and became the next Clan Chief of Clan Gregor. It was also in 1822 that he suggested the formation of the Clan Gregor Society and he led Clan Gregor up the Royal Mile for the visit of King George IV to present the Royal Honours of Scotland.

He was the Permanent Secretary of the Admiralty.

He was appointed at Aide de Camp to King George the IV in 1825. In 1831, he was appointed Governor of Dominica and the following year became Governor of Antigua and the Leeward Islands, during which time he assented to the abolition of slavery on the island in 1834.

He became Governor of Barbados and the Windward Islands in 1836

Sir Evan John Murray-MacGregor was married to Lady Elizabeth Murray, the daughter of John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl who owned Blair Castle at the time.
