- In 1745 he was one of the most prominent supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie, during the Uprising.1 In a rearguard action during the retreat from Derby he defeated a greatly superior force at Clifton Moor, Westmorland, and after the dispersal of the Jacobite army, was entrusted by the Prince with a sum of money for the relief of his distressed followers, and remained in hiding in the mountains with a price of £1,000 on his head.
