  OBITUARY MR. J. E. PHILP, OF HOBART HOBART, Thursday. Three days after the death of his brother, Mr. W. A. Philp, of Taroona, Mr. John Ernest Philp, one of the greatest authorities in Tasmania on shipping and whaling in the early days of the state, died at his home, Lindisfarne, to-day. The late Mr. John Philp was born in 1869, and was the son of the late Captain John Phllp, formerly well known in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel trade, and Mrs. Sarah Philp, who has attained the age of 93 years. Mr. Philp was a writer of outstanding ability, and several of his works, dealing with the early shipping of Hobart Town, formed a valuable history of that colourful period. His last book, "Whaling Ways of Hobart Town," was well received in Australia and New Zealand, and also found a ready market in the United Kingdom and America. He also contributed to Tasmanian and New Zealand newspapers. Mr. Philp carried on business as a shipping agent at Hobart, and also for some time lived in the Solomon Islands and on the West Coast of Tasmania. He worked on the Government survey of the road to Mount Lyall and surveyed the track to Frenchman's Cap. He was a foundation member of the Shiplovers' Society and took an active interest in yachting, being at one time secretary of the Derwent Sailing Squadron. Of a kindly, generous nature, the late Mr. Philp was widely known throughout the state. His wife, formerly Miss Sarah Robinson, of Triabunna, and a family of six survive him. His daughters are Mesdames J. H. Gould and H. Scurrah: and sons Messrs. Colin E. (formerly of Launceston), Stuart, Murray, and David Philp. The funeral will take place at Cornelian Bay Cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
