    • SUDDEN DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT

Early this morning Mrs. Abigail Dann, of Melbourne St, West Maitland died very suddenly of heart failure.  Mrs. Dann was well known in Maitland and District, having resided here nearly half a century.  For several years Mrs. Dann had followed the profession of mid-wife and being called upon shortly after two o'clock this morning, she left home at half past two.  She was then apparently in the best of health and made no complaint to her daughter, who was speaking with her before she left.  Mrs Dann must have walked as far as Rohan's Hotel, just below Dr. Power's and was overcome by sudden weakening of the heart. She was seen sitting on the doorstep by Mr Sams, baker, and she asked him to call Dr. Power.  Mr Sams at once called up the Doctor and with assistance took the dying woman to the surgery.  There Dr. Power and Mrs Power did all that was possible to revive her, but she died in about half an hour.  Mrs Dann (whose maiden name was Goade) was born near Plymouth, England.  About forty-eight years ago she came to this country and had resided in Maitland ever since.  Her Husband Mr Horace Dann, died eight years ago.  Deceased leaves five grown-up daughters, fourteen grandchildren and on great-grandchild.

A woman of active disposition, she had never been troubled with serious illness and her sudden death came as a great shock to her relatives and friends.  She was a woman of kindly heart and charitable disposition and she will be greatly missed.  The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon: the body will be interred in the cemetery at East Maitland.

NOTE by Jean Gilbert - Abigail's Great grand-daughter.....1996.
Abigail was the defacto wife of Henry Hayward to whom she had three daughters, Susannah, Emma and Matilda - my grandmother - Her two sons died in infancy.. Two of her daughters mentioned were in reality her grand-daughters whose mother Emma and her stepfather was the father of the two girls, Edie and Elsie.
