- Robert Barclay 3rd of Urie husband of Una Cameron or Anne Cameron
- David Fox 2016
Robert Barclay 3rd of Urie was born on 20 Jul 1699 at Urie, Fetterose, Kincardineshire, the son of Robert Barclay 2nd of Urie (1672–1747) and Elizabeth Braine/O'Brian (1674–)
Note that the History of the Barclay Family differs on his birthdate and says:
"Robert Barclay of Urie son and heir b.1692"
However it seems the grave has:
"The Grave of Robert Barclay of Ury son and heir of Robert Barclay of Ury and Elizabeth O'Brian, daughter of James O'Brian Esq of London, and son of Colonel O'Brian of the Kingdom of Ireland. He was grandson to Robert Barclay of Ury, Author of the Apology for the Quakers; was born 20th July 1699 and died 10th October 1760."
Marriage
Sources all agree that Robert Barclay married a daughter of Sir Ewen Cameron 5th of Locheil. There is a level of disagreement however about exactly which daughter he married.
Possible wife Anne
The History of the Barclay Family Vol1 has that he married Anne Cameron. Note that Anne Cameron was 24 years his senior.
Anne Cameron was born about 1668 at Inverness-shire, the daughter of Ewen Dubh Cameron 5th of Lochiel Sir, 17th Chief of Clan Cameron (1628–1719) and Isabel MacLean (1620-1675)
Seems the History of the Barclay Family was wrong on this occasion.
Possible Wife Una
Burkes Peerage says of Una Cameron daughter of Ewen Cameron of Locheil:
"Una, married Robert Barclay of Ury."
It also says: "Anne, married Alan Maclean of Ardgour"
Camerons of Fassifern agrees that he married Una Cameron. Una was 10 years his senior.
Una Cameron was born about 1689 at Lochiel, Inverness-shire, the daughter of Ewen Dubh Cameron 5th of Lochiel Sir, 17th Chief of Clan Cameron (1628–1719) and Jean Barclay (1656–1718)
The Peerage agrees and has:
"Robert Barclay, 3rd of Urie married Une (sic) Cameron, daughter of Sire Ewen Camerfon of Lochiel, 17th Chief of Clan Cameron and Jean Barclay"
My preference was to go with Burkes Peerage, Una, and I then found the following solid support:
"It further appears, by a minute of the Aberdeen Monthly Meeting that 'Una Cameron, daughter to Ewen Cameron of Lochell' laid before then her intention of marriage with 'Robert Barclay, grandson of the Apologist'" [2]
Done and dusted :)
Children
As one might expect, there is also disagreement about the names of the children. There is agreement only on Robert and possibly Jean. In The History of the Barclay Family Vol1 in fact, Jean is listed as "the only daughter".
History of the Barclay Family lists the following children of Robert and Anne:
. Robert Barclay of Urie MP Kincardinshire (1732–1797) m. Alladyce
. Jean Barclay (only daughter)
. Ewen Barclay
. David Barclay
The Peerage lists only one child of Robert and Una:
. Robert Barclay (c.1731 - 8 Apr 1797) m. Sarah Anne Allardice, daughter of James Allardice and Anne Barclay
Camerons of Fassifern lists the following children of Robert and Una:
. Robert Barclay (1731-)
. Jean Barclay
. Eva Barclay (not if Jean weas the only daughter)
. Alexander Barclay
Netherlands-Genealogie lists another child of Robert and Una, but I discovered that she married their son Robert:
. Lucy Cameron (1737-1757)
Emigration
I am inclined to doubt the following:
"Little is known about this Robert, except that it is believed that he, his wife, and some of his children, emigrated to the Colonies about 1747. He was born in Kincardineshire, Scotland, but died in Rowan County, North Carolina."
Robert's burial in the family churchyard argues against emigration to Rowan County and a death in America
Character
"The above Robert who was of a turbulant and quarrelsom disposition, was fond of travelling through the country incognito. When on one of these excursions, it is told that he arrived at Panmure on a dark winter's morning, and going straightway to the brewhouse, the brewer who was an Englishman, and taking Barclay for an itinerant mender of old brass, exclaimed - "You are well come tinker, for my Lord's kettle requires mending" "What sayest thou, fellow?" said Barclay in a rage; and, with a cudgel which he had in his hand, he struck the brewer over the leg and thigh, and broke both bones. When Earl William of Panmure heard of the occurrence. and guessing it to be Barclay, his Lordship traced him to the House of Fotheringham, and there made him sign an obligation which secured the brewer in a small pension from the estate of Ury, which he lived long to enjoy"
Death
Una Barclay nee Cameron died 1746 in Scotland
Robert Barclay died 10 Oct 1760 in Aberdeenshire. It is less likely, as above, that he died in Rowan County, North Carolina.
