    • Samuel Wiggins enlisted in the 2nd Royal Marines in 1801. He accompanied Lt Governor, Captain David Collins to New South Wales in 1803.

      The ship HMS Calcutta sailed from Spithead, London, England on 25 April 1803 and sailed via the Isle of wight and Portsmouth with convicts and settlers. With the supply ship Ocean they made landing inside the heads at Port Phillip (later known as Sorrento). This first settlement was abandoned after 4 months in favour of a site on the river Derwent in Van Diemen's Land where Hobart was founded in 1804. Samuel Wiggins was one of the marines who joined the detachment of Royal Marines that accompained Lt Governor, Captain David Collins to Hobart Town.

      Samual was accompanied by his wife Susannah. Their son Thomas was born on board HMS Calcutta on 11 Jun 1803. His birth was the first birth recorded in the official baptismal register in Van Diemen's Land.

      The grand population of Hobart on the 9 August 1804 was listed as being 433. This included 298 convicts and their families, 44 settlers, 63 Military and 28 Civil Establishment - it inlcudes:

      Samuel and Susannah Wiggins my 5 x great grandparents (fom the Military sector) and William and Frances Nichols my 4 x great grandparents (from the Settlers sector).

      Samuel Died on 17 July 1811 and his widow Susannah remarried in 1812 to another Royal Marine Thomas Pennington.
