  • Notes
    • Dawson Warren wrote THE JOURNAL OF A BRITISH CHAPLAIN - PARIS during the peace negotiations of 1801-1802 which gives details of the family as well as the JACKSONS who were his in-laws.Dawson owed much of his success in life to the friendship of the fifth DUKE OF LEEDS and the JACKSONS. His good living came to him whilst still in deacon's orders to his fortunate father-in-law the Rev. THOMAS JACKSON 1745-1797. Born 14 Dec 1770 Dawson was the son of JAMES WARREN of Walcot House, Bath(1736-1788), and his wife MARTHA DAWSON (1742-1798 ), a daughter of JOHN DAWSON. JOHN WARREN was the son of JOHN WARREN of Long Melford in Suffolk, and the grandson of REV. JOHN WARREN, Rector of Boxford (1687-1726 ). In his own words Dawson informs us of his earlier life. 16 Nov 1790, I entered Trinity College,Oxford. In the course of time 1794 I took the degree of BA, and on the 21st.Dec 1794, was ordained by the Bishop of Lincoln to the curacy of Carleton. A few months after I addressed and was accepted by my cousin CHARLOTTE LUCY JACKSON, daughter of the REV. DR. THOMAS JACKSON, CANON RESIDENTIARY of St. PAUL'S and CHARLOTTE DOWNING. DAWSON and CHARLOTTE were cousins because they were both grandchildren of ANN WARREN . The vicarage of Edmonton became vacant on the 15th. Oct 1795, and on the 29th. Nov.1795, on the presentation of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's, I was admitted into priest's orders and received Institution as Vicar of Edmonton at Fulham from the Bishop of London. I took the degree of M.A. in 1797, and was appointed Chaplain to H.R.H.the Duke of York. Unlike his brother-in-law FRANCIS JAMES JACKSON, the diplomatist, Plenipotentacy, Dawson Warren has found no place in the Dictionary of National Biography, but it is otherwise in The Biographical Dictionary of living authors,The Parish Priest. On the title page is a vignette view of Edmonton Church, after a drawing by Dawson, showing the building, before "the walls were covered with brick and the Gothic stone window frames changed for wood." Dawson also is mentioned as a translator into English verse of a Latin poem entitled Sacerodos Paraecialis Rusticus. He is also mentioned regarding a rather acrimonious dispute with the Mr Robert Waitman of Farringdon Ward and Common Council of London concerning the admision of a pupil to Christ's Hospital. This was much reported in the newspapers at the time. These can be accessed at http://access.gale.com/newstrial

The young Vicar of Edmonton was married to CHARLOTTE LUCY JACKSON daughter of Rev. Dr. Thomas Jackson and CHARLOTTE DOWDING of Tottenham (1754- ), sister to Sir George Jackson and Francis James Jackson (1770-1814). Under the date 19th.Jan.1796 Charlotte writes in her journal: "My daughter Charlotte Lucy was married at Ludgate Church to the Rev. Dawson Warren to whom Doctor J. had given the living at Edmonton. Francis kissed hands on being appointed Ambassador at Constantinople".

The visit to Paris marked an epoch in the life of Dawson Warren and the history of his family. In 1800 four children had been born to the young couple. Charlotte inherited a large share of the personal attractiveness for which her brother the Minister Plenipotentary to France was remarkable. Louisa Warren was born at Edmonton on 24th Oct.1776-1862. She married Rev.Thomas Durham, curate of Barton Latimer Northamptonshire, in 1824. CHARLOTTE 1798-1889, AMELIA 1799-1869, and DAWSON 1800-1838.

The fifth child was Anne 1802-1878 married to Major Thomas John Hammond 1791-1875 and mother to 7 boys, The Rev. Canon Charles Hammond, Col.Sir Arthur George Hammond V.C. K.C.B., Dr.William Hammond, Librarian of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, Dr Francis James Hammond who was sent to Chatworth prison in 1879 for 10 years penal servitude for "attempting to procure an abortion on Ellen Saunders". This case was extensively reported in the newspapers and can be viewed on gale website., Col.Alfred John Hammond, Frederick Hammond and Col. Harry Albany Hammond who married Dawson's great granddaughter Mildred Henderson. Dawson's sixth child was Rev.Blackburn Warren 1803-1894 Vicar of St. Mary's Malborough. Seventh child was Frederick 1805 -1805. Then Lucy 1806-1823. Ninth child was Rev.Charles Warren 1808-1883 Vicar of Over Cambridge, Francis 1810-1880, Selina 1812-1879, Susanna 1814-1896, and Frederick Skinner Warren Ambassador 1816-1887

In Edmonton Church a mural tablet, ornamented with the Warren arms and the device Curre ut vincas, bears the following inscription:-

In the Memory of DAWSON WARREN M.A.
Forty three years Vicar of this Parish who after faithfully preaching the
Gospel and adorning it by devout and Holy Life by a paternal attention
to the wants of his flock especially in the charitable instruction of the young
and by kindness, meekness and courtesy towards all.
Entered into rest on the 17th day of December 1838, in the 69th year of his age.                                                                                                             This monument was erected by his grateful parishioners as a token of affectionate regard
