  Extracts from "ALL THAT WE INHERIT". Being the family memorials of the WALKERS and MATHERS of Hobart. Written by PETER BENSON WALKER (1922-1987). Published 1968. These are all Sarah's recollections. (Upon arrival in Hobart, 1922).  "My father rented a house in Brisbane St., opposite Saliers, from old Pullen.  We went there straight from the ship." "About 1824 or 1825, my father took up land at Muddy Plains on the sea beach on account of my mother's health.  About 1825, before I left school, my mother went to live at the house". "About 1824 or 1825 my mother went down to the farm at Lauderdale.  She took Samuel with her, but none of the others.  We all remained in town, and I kept house for my father.  I went down to the farm when I left school, about 1827 or 1828, when I was 15 or 16 years old.  As my mother was not able to do much herself, not even to walk to the top of the garden.  I kept house at Lauderdale, served out the rations". "After my mother died (1931) my father and I lived at the farm.  We lived at the farm at Lauderdale until about 1835, when the property was sold". "When the property was sold, we came to town.  My father took the place where Uncle Joseph now is.  A shop in Liverpool St.". "Until I was married I used to live at the shop". "After the honeymoon (1840) we lived in a new shop in Liverpool St. from old William Lindsay". "About the end of the year 1852, my husband leased the house "Narryna", at Hampton Rd. in which Hyam Moses lived". ROBERT MATHER AND FAMILY. To the Editor of "The Mercury" Sir_.If my notes be correct, the particulars given in your issue of today require modification. According to these, Robert Matther (whom I knew in 1844 and later), after being a hosier in London, reached Hobart in 1812 and soon afterwards began business there. On July 25 1823 he was appointed a foundation trustee of the Wesleyan Church Hobart. He gave up business and went to Muddy Plains and. in 1829 was occupying the property there still known as "Mathers Farm". He resumed business in Hobart about 1836. In or about 1832 he became a member of the Society of Friends established by Messrs. Backhouse and Walker. His daughter Sarah Benson Mather married George Washington Walker in 1840 an event which closely identified the Mather and Walker families. Strictly speaking therefore the business referred to by is a continuous concern, only eighty-six ( and not one hundred years) old. So far as I know the Wilkinson business referred to by you is the oldest Hobart continuous business. I have been informed that that business began in a shop other than the present one, but I have no doubt  that the latter became the permanent home of "John Wilkinson's" business in 1830 - Yours etc -  ANTILL
