• Notes

  Frederick Arundel Downing, a merchant, purchased the government owned bark Lady Franklin in 1855. The vessel was built at the Colonial Government Dockyard, Port Arthur. He renamed the vessel Emily Downing and put her to service, first as a trader then as a whaling vessel.
