| Notes |
- 1 - Sir John Murray (Macgregor) of Lanrick (Glencarnaig branch), elected chief in 1775. Baronetcy created in 1795.
Alexander of Balhaldie was not elected chief and was living outside Scotland. Had he been more dynamic the opportunity for Sir John to campaign for the chiefship might not have arisen. There were also disputes about the seniority and right of the original Balhaldie in 1714. Alexander unsuccessfully sued Sir John Murray in 1795. Note the numbering suggests that Sir John Murray did not accept the succession of William in 1743.
2 - In 1774, when the Act of Proscription was finally repealed, there was another election by 800 Gregarach in attendance. General John Murray MacGregor of Lanrick, descended from the Brackley/GlenCarnaig line, became the new Chief. He was elected while Alexander of Balhaldie was still alive and serving in the army in the West Indies. The current Chief is descended from the GlenCarnaig line.
3 - Joined the East India Company and was appointed Auditor-General of Bengal. Sent money back to Scotland to buy the estate of Lanrick which he called "MacGregor earth". He built a castle there known as Castle Gregor. Swore loyalty to King George III who finally lifted the act of proscription. Many of the Gregarach kept their aliases, including Sir John, who remained a Murray.
Wife was possibly Anne MacGregor of Roro, but more likely Anne, daughter of William MacLeod.
4 - After the 17th Chiefs death in 1743 the MacGregors continued officially chiefless and nameless until 1774, when, largely through the efforts of Gregor Boidheach MacGregor, a cadet of Glengyle, an Act of Parliament was passed repealing the statutes against Clan Gregor, thus allowing the names Gregor and MacGregor to be used again. Soon afterwards 856 clansmen of the name MacGregor subscribed a deed admitting John MacGregor or Murray of Lanrick (ancestor of the present Chief) to be 'proper and true Chief of Clan Alpin. In 1795 he was formally reinvested in the chiefship by the Crown through the Lord Lyon King of Arms, by recording in his name the heraldic insignia of the ancient chiefs Lineage (of the 18th Chief.
