  Death: Jan. 21, 1943, At Sea Of the six airmen who perished when their aircraft was lost, Pilot Officer Beale was the only one to be laid to rest in a military cemetery. His remains drifted ashore, so were interred with military honours in an Algerian cemetery. Vickers Wellington HX690 of 179 RAF Squadron took off from Gibraltar during the evening of 21 Jan 1943 on an anti-submarine patrol over the Mediterranean Sea. There was no communication from the Wellington after it had taken flight from its Gibraltar base, and it never returned to its base. All six servicemen presumably died at sea, six of them lost. Wellington HX690 air crew members were:- RAF Sergeant John Henry BROWN, RCAF Flying Officer Brian Withers CARMICHAEL, RAAF Terence Harry GORDON-GLASSFORD, RAF Pilot Officer George Edward HARVEY, RAF Flying Officer John Saynor HUSTLER and RAAF Pilot Officer Herbert Eldon BEALE (his were the only remains to wash ashore).
