• Notes

  The Dyer family came from Strathern in the Vale of Bevoir, Leicester, England. Benjamin Bissell Dyer travelled to Australia aboard the ‘Wanstead’ leaving England 26 July 1829 and arriving in Australia 30 Jan 1830. He worked as a tutor to the two sons of Rev. Witternoon, the Colonial Chaplain, Swan River, Perth, Western Australia. Secretary to Colonial Secretary, Peter Broun. Dismissed 16 June 1831, sighted at a Land Sale whilst off work supposedly sick in bed. November 1831 appointed Overseer of Road Works on York to Greenmount Road. Left for Sydney, NSW per ‘Governor Bourke’ 15 Jan 1833. Married Anne Reay of Sydney. —————— Benjamin Bissell Dyer (c.1796-1875) first arrived in Western Australia from England in 1830. In 1833 he travelled to NSW, where he married Ann Smith Reay (1806-1879). In the mid 1830s Benjamin and Ann moved to Hobart with a daughter, Catherine. In Hobart they had seven more children - Sarah, Benjamin, Clara Maria, Frederic, William, Agnes, and Robert. Benjamin and Ann were both teachers at St Davids, Hobart Town. Benjamin was a head teacher at Central School, Hobart from 1852-55. He is also noted as being a dancing and music master. B B Dyer died in 1875 while postmaster at Brighton. Ann died four years later. Both are buried at St Marks Church, Pontville. Clara Maria Dyer (1839-1916) married Henry Dean (1838-1905) in 1863. Their son Frank Barclay Dean (1874-c.1920) married Miriam Margaret Bramich (1882-1962). State Library of Tasmania Archives Agency No. NG3712
