    • George Fredrick Read

At age 11 he joined the East India Company as a midshipman under the guiding hand of Captain Gabriel Bayliss. At age 18, George was master and owner of the "Amelia", arriving in Sydney in May 1814. In 1816, the brig "Lynx" was built and with George Read as master and owner visited Sydney and Hobart. In early 1816 George sailed the "Lynx" from Hobart to Sydney. Six weeks later he married Elizabeth Driver. They settled in Sydney, producing a son in 1817. (also George Federick) After only two years, in 1818, George and Elizabeth with son George sailed to Hobart, arriving on board the "Jupiter" in October after a six day voyage. Their second child, and their third child, Aubrey, were born in Hobart in the next few years. George became active in commerce in Hobart. The family lived at Knopwood House in Battery Point while the family home was being built on an acerage at New Town. During this time the family enjoyed access to the Kings Store. George was Superintendant, Public Works, a partner in the firm Read and Bethune (issuing promissory notes) and founder and director of the Bank of Van Diemens Land.
George's wife Elizabeth died in 1821. He remarried in 1824 to Margaret Terry from Tynwald. She was 24, he 36. That union produced a further eleven children. By the 1820's George owned a considerable area of land and other assets.

      Kinvarra was built in 1827.
George died at Lynburn (Leybourne) New Town in 1860. Upon his death, George's fortune was distributed to his children. Ivanhoe and Kinvarra were left to (John) Terry Read, third eldest child from the marriage to Margaret Terry.
      (Deleted section - see comment.)
Thomas Gabriel Read was the third child from the union between George and Margaret. His middle name came from Captain Bayliss, to whom George was apprenticed while in the East India Company. Thomas Gabriel became famous as a metallurgist. He discovered significant mineral deposits in Western Australia, USA, New Zealand (Gabriels Gully), Victoria and the Read mineral belt in Tasmania. Mt Read is named after him. Lake Margaret, on the west Coast of Tasmania is named after his mother.
Robert Cartwright, eldest son from the second marriage managed Ivanhoe from the age of 16. He moved to Redlands in 1858. He became a Judge and was an original Commissioner of Tasmanian Fisheries. Tasmanian Fisheries leased three acres of land from him to establish the Salmon Ponds.
Robert Cartwright's son (also George Federick) donated the three acres of land to Inland Fisheries during the 1840's.
Terry Read (John Terry Read) married Anne Charlotte Nicholson. This union did not produce any children.
Kinvarra was given to Claude (Nicholson), the nephew of Annie, who had worked at Ivanhoe and Kinvarra.
